Why choose a cork yoga mat?

A yoga mat is one of those simple objects you can end up using hundreds of times.

For yoga. Pilates. Stretching. Mobility. A few quiet minutes on the floor at the beginning or end of the day.

So we think what it’s made from matters.

The OTM Cork Yoga Mat is made in Portugal from a flexible cork and rubber compound, creating a naturally tactile surface without the bulky feel of a heavily cushioned exercise mat.

It is a simple idea: take something ordinary and choose a better version.

What is a cork yoga mat?

A cork yoga mat is an exercise mat that uses cork within its surface or construction instead of relying entirely on conventional synthetic surfaces.

Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree (Quercus suber). Portugal is closely associated with cork production, and cork oak landscapes form an important part of the country’s natural and cultural heritage.

But not all cork yoga mats are constructed in the same way.

Some use a thin cork layer bonded to another backing material. Others combine cork with rubber or other materials to create different levels of flexibility, cushioning and grip.

The OTM mat is made in Portugal from a cork and rubber compound, giving it its distinctive cork appearance and tactile feel while remaining flexible enough to roll for storage.

What are the benefits of a cork yoga mat?

People choose cork yoga mats for several reasons, including their natural texture, feel, appearance and suitability for different types of movement.

Here are the characteristics we particularly value.

1. Cork has a naturally tactile surface

Cork doesn't feel like a conventional plastic exercise surface.

Its texture gives the mat a warm, natural character that feels particularly appropriate for slower, controlled forms of movement such as yoga, Pilates, stretching and mobility work.

For us, this was one of the biggest reasons to choose it.

The object you practise on changes how the ritual feels.

2. Cork can provide good grip

One of the most common questions about cork yoga mats is whether they're slippery.

The answer isn't quite as simple as saying cork is always non-slip.

Grip depends on the construction of the individual mat, the movement being performed, moisture and the person using it.

Cork surfaces are often particularly valued because their grip can feel more pronounced as moisture increases. That is one reason cork mats have become popular for yoga and practices where hands or feet may become warm.

A new cork mat can also feel different from one that has been used regularly, so it is worth getting to know the surface rather than expecting every cork mat to behave identically.

3. Cork feels warm and natural

There is something noticeably different about placing your hands or bare feet on cork rather than a shiny synthetic surface.

It feels warmer and more tactile.

That's difficult to communicate through a specification sheet, but immediately apparent when you use one.

For an object that sits between your body and the floor, we think that matters.

4. Cork looks at home in the home

Exercise equipment is often designed as if it will live permanently inside a gym.

Most of us don't.

Our mats end up beside the bed, leaning against a wall, underneath a desk or rolled up in the corner of the living room.

Cork has a quiet, natural appearance that works particularly well in a home environment.

A movement mat shouldn't necessarily need hiding when you've finished using it.

5. Cork is an interesting natural material

Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees rather than requiring the tree itself to be cut down.

Once harvested, the bark regenerates and can be harvested again over time.

That makes cork an unusual renewable natural material.

We deliberately avoid describing any product as simply “sustainable” based on one material alone. Manufacturing, additional materials, packaging, transport, longevity and eventual disposal all matter too.

For us, cork is interesting because it combines function, tactility, durability potential and natural character in one material.

Are cork yoga mats good for yoga?

Yes, cork yoga mats can be suitable for many styles of yoga.

The textured surface makes cork particularly interesting for practices involving significant contact through the hands and feet.

However, choosing a yoga mat is personal.

Someone wanting substantial cushioning for their joints may prefer a thicker mat, while someone who prioritises connection with the floor may prefer a thinner profile.

The OTM mat is 3mm thick, giving it a relatively slim, grounded feel.

Are cork yoga mats good for Pilates?

A cork yoga mat can also be used for Pilates, particularly for standing exercises, controlled movement and mat work where a firmer connection to the floor is preferred.

Thickness matters here.

A 3mm mat provides less cushioning than a thick Pilates-specific exercise mat. If you require significant padding beneath your spine, knees or hips, a thicker mat may be more appropriate.

We would rather tell you that than pretend one mat is perfect for absolutely everybody.

The OTM mat was selected as a versatile everyday movement surface for yoga, Pilates, stretching, mobility and home exercise.

Are cork yoga mats slippery?

Cork yoga mats are generally chosen partly for their tactile surface, but grip varies between individual mats and conditions.

Dry hands, moisture, pressure, movement style and the construction of the mat can all influence how grippy a mat feels.

Cork is particularly interesting because moisture can increase the feeling of grip on its surface.

If your hands are extremely dry when beginning your practice, lightly dampening the areas beneath your hands can sometimes help you experience the surface differently.

Do cork yoga mats get more grippy when wet?

Cork can provide increased traction when slightly damp, which is one reason it is frequently considered for warmer or sweatier yoga practices.

That does not mean the mat needs to be soaked before use.

For most everyday practices, simply use the mat normally and allow its natural surface characteristics to do their job.

Grip will also vary according to the individual mat and user.

How thick should a cork yoga mat be?

There is no universally perfect yoga mat thickness.

It depends on the balance you want between cushioning and connection with the floor.

As a general principle:

Thinner mats tend to provide a firmer, more grounded feel.

Thicker mats provide more cushioning but can feel less stable during certain standing or balancing movements.

The OTM Cork Yoga Mat is 3mm thick.

We chose that profile because we wanted the mat to remain relatively slim and grounded rather than heavily cushioned.

How do you clean a cork yoga mat?

For everyday care, cork yoga mats generally benefit from gentle cleaning rather than aggressive scrubbing or soaking.

After use:

Wipe the surface gently with a soft damp cloth.

Allow the mat to air dry completely before rolling it away.

Avoid prolonged soaking.

Avoid harsh cleaning chemicals unless specifically recommended for your particular mat.

Store the mat somewhere dry and away from prolonged excessive heat or moisture.

Because construction varies between manufacturers, always follow the care instructions supplied with your particular mat.

Cork yoga mat vs rubber yoga mat: what's the difference?

This comparison can be slightly misleading because cork and rubber aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

Many cork yoga mats use cork alongside rubber or another material.

Broadly, cork is often selected for its natural texture, appearance and surface characteristics, while rubber is commonly used to provide flexibility, weight, cushioning or traction.

The important question isn't simply:

Cork or rubber?

It is:

How has this particular mat been constructed?

The OTM mat combines cork and rubber into a flexible compound rather than presenting the feel of a rigid cork sheet.

That combination is one of the things that attracted us to this particular mat.

Do cork yoga mats smell?

Natural materials can have a characteristic scent, particularly when first unpacked.

A new cork or rubber-containing mat may therefore have a noticeable material smell when first opened.

If yours does, unroll it in a well-ventilated room and allow it some time to air before use.

The smell should not be disguised with strong fragrance — we'd rather let the materials be what they are.

How long does a cork yoga mat last?

There isn't a responsible universal answer.

How long any yoga mat lasts depends on its construction, frequency of use, movement style, storage and care.

Signs that a mat may need replacing include significant deterioration of the surface, loss of integrity, cracking, separation or changes that affect safe and comfortable use.

Taking care of your mat and allowing it to dry properly between uses can help preserve it.

Is a cork yoga mat right for you?

A cork yoga mat may be worth considering if you want:

  • a naturally tactile movement surface
  • a mat suitable for yoga, stretching and everyday movement
  • a quieter, more natural aesthetic
  • a relatively grounded feel
  • an alternative to the appearance of conventional synthetic exercise mats
  • something that can comfortably exist within your home rather than feeling like gym equipment

It may not be the best choice if you specifically need substantial cushioning or an unusually thick exercise surface.

Choosing better doesn't mean choosing what someone else tells you is best.

It means choosing what works better for the way you actually live.

Why we chose cork

We didn't start with the ambition to create more exercise equipment.

We started with a simpler question.

Could an everyday movement mat be better?

Better to touch.

Better to live with.

Made from more considered materials.

Beautiful enough that you don't immediately want to put it away.

We found our answer in cork.

Our mat is made in Portugal from a flexible cork and rubber compound and measures 183 × 61cm with a slim 3mm profile.

It's designed for yoga, Pilates, stretching, mobility and the small moments of movement that become part of everyday life.

Because better living rarely comes from changing everything.

Sometimes it starts by replacing ordinary with better.
